Results from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
University of Kansas, Lawrence Campus
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) measures undergraduate student participation in programs and activities provided to promote learning and personal development. KU uses the survey results to better understand how students are connecting with the university and to identify effective programs and practices and then applies this information to guide curriculum development and co-curricular program design. KU’s participation in NSSE is part of a coordinated set of strategies designed to enhance the undergraduate experience for all KU students, including improving retention, persistence, and graduation rates.

Comparisons of KU Results by YearKU administered NSSE during Spring 2018, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2004, and 2001. Note: The NSSE Survey instrument was modified prior to the 2013 admnistration cycle. Longitudinal comparisons between 2013 and prior years are not valid for most questions. |

SnapshotThis Snapshot is a concise collection of key findings from your institution’s NSSE survey administration. We hope this information stimulates discussions about the undergraduate experience. Additional details about these and other results appear in the reports referenced throughout. |

Engagement IndicatorsEngagement Indicators (EIs) provide a useful summary of the detailed information contained in KU students’ NSSE responses. By combining responses to related NSSE questions, each EI offers valuable information about a distinct aspect of student engagement. |

High-Impact PracticesDue to their positive associations with student learning and retention, certain undergraduate opportunities are designated "high-impact." High-Impact Practices (HIPs) share several traits: They demand considerable time and effort, facilitate learning outside of the classroom, require meaningful interactions with faculty and students, encourage collaboration with diverse others, and provide frequent and substantive feedback. NSSE asks students about their participation in six HIPs. Unlike most questions on the NSSE survey, the HIP questions are not limited to the current school year. Thus, senior students' responses include participation from prior years. |

Frequencies and Statistical ComparisonsThe Frequencies and Statistical Comparisons report presents item-by-item student responses and statistical comparisons that allow you to examine patterns of similarity and difference between KU students and those at comparison group institutions. The report uses information from all randomly selected or census-administered students. |

Administration SummaryThis report provides an overview of KU's NSSE survey administration, including details about our population and sample, response rates, representativeness of your respondents, survey customization choices, and recruitment message schedule. This information can be useful for assessing data quality and planning future NSSE administrations. |

Respondent ProfileThe Respondent Profile presents both student- and institution-reported demographic information, allowing you to examine similarities and differences between KU students and those at comparison group institutions. This report uses information from all randomly selected or census-administered students. The display below highlights important details in the report to keep in mind when interpreting the results. |

Selected Comparison GroupsThe NSSE Institutional Report displays core survey results for KU students alongside those of three comparison groups. This report summarizes how KU's comparison groups were constructed and lists the institutions within them. NSSE comparison groups may be customized by (a) identifying specific institutions from the list of all 2017 and 2018 NSSE participants, (b) composing the group by selecting institutional characteristics, or (c) a combination of these. |

DEEP ProjectKU was selected to participate in the Documenting Effective Educational Practice (DEEP) project (2002-2003) that assembled case studies of 20 colleges and universities with both higher-than-predicted scores on five benchmarks of effective educational practice and higher-than-expected graduation rates to learn what they do to promote student success. The results of the entire DEEP project are described in the book Student Success in College. |
